Director of Data Center Field Engineering

About the role

The Director of Data Center Field Engineering is responsible for building, leading, and scaling the company’s Data Center Implementation Practice. This role owns delivery standards, operational excellence, partner strategy, and financial performance for all data center field execution.


The practice delivers infrastructure services including structured cabling, rack & stack, rack build, hardware installation, labeling, testing, and site readiness across enterprise, colocation, and hyperscale environments.


This leader operates at the intersection of strategy, execution, and scale—ensuring consistent delivery while enabling rapid growth, margin discipline, and customer trust.


What you'll be doing


Practice Leadership & Strategy

  • Own the Data Center Field Engineering practice end-to-end (people, process, partners, performance).
  • Define and evolve service offerings for:
  • Structured cabling (copper and fiber)
  • Rack & stack and hardware installation
  • Rack build, labeling, and standards compliance
  • Physical layer testing and certification
  • Establish repeatable delivery models for:
  • Large-scale data center deployments
  • Colocation builds
  • Multi-site and national rollouts
  • Partner with Sales and Solutions to ensure offerings are sellable, scoped correctly, and executable at scale.


Delivery & Execution Oversight

  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to standard.
  • Own delivery readiness post-signature, including:
  • Resource alignment
  • Partner strategy
  • Tooling and standards enforcement
  • Set expectations for practice leads, project engineers, and implementation teams while maintaining governance without micromanagement.
  • Act as executive escalation point for critical delivery risks or customer issues.


Organizational Leadership

  • Lead and scale a team that includes:
  • Practice Leads
  • Project Engineers (technical authority and delivery governance)
  • Implementation Specialists / Technicians
  • Partner and subcontractor resources
  • Define role clarity, career paths, and performance expectations across all levels.
  • Build leadership bench strength within the practice.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, quality, and continuous improvement.


Standards, Quality & Tooling

  • Define and enforce delivery standards for:
  • Rack layouts and build standards
  • Cabling standards and pathways
  • Labeling conventions
  • Test results and documentation
  • Own quality metrics, audits, and exception management.
  • Ensure tooling supports scale (templates, playbooks, checklists, reporting).


Partner & Ecosystem Management

  • Own partner strategy for data center delivery:
  • Partner selection and onboarding
  • Capability validation
  • Performance management
  • Balance internal delivery vs. partner delivery based on scale, geography, and margin.
  • Ensure partner costs align with deal financials and delivery expectations.

 

Financial & Operational Accountability

  • Own practice-level financial performance.
  • Ensure margin protection through:
  • Proper scoping
  • Resource modeling
  • Partner cost controls
  • Forecast capacity needs and scale responsibly.
  • Identify efficiency gains and cost-avoidance opportunities.
  • Embrace and support Computacenter’s mission and core values.


What you have

  • 10+ years in data center field engineering, infrastructure delivery, or technical professional services leadership.
  • 5+ years leading multi-layer teams (managers, engineers, technicians).
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Proven experience delivering:
  • Large-scale data center builds
  • Colocation or enterprise environments
  • Multi-site or national programs
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Structured cabling systems
  • Rack & stack operations
  • Data center physical infrastructure standards
  • Demonstrated ability to scale practices, not just run projects.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing delivery margins.
  • Executive-level communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.
