Senior Test Manager


Location: Hatfield or Nottingham (some travel to Milton Keynes)


A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Test Manager to join the Test & Validation Management Team (TVM). The objective of the team is to protect the customers’ IT environments from any adverse impact of releases introduced into these environments (e.g. monthly Microsoft security patching). This is done by performing testing of the in-scope applications and services. TVM manages the entire test lifecycle, from reviewing requirements, through planning, test execution and defect management, to making a recommendation for the release under test.


As a Senior Test manager you will take ownership of the quality assurance and testing (QAT) strategy as part of a broader risk-based approach.


Test managers:

            •             are responsible for test improvement and optimisation

            •             may promote and advocate test capabilities internally

            •             take responsibility for talent, succession planning and supplier management

            •             make important decisions relating to test within the context of the delivery environment

            You will need the following skills for this role, although the level of expertise for each will vary, depending on the role level.


Roles and responsibilities;

            •             Building up and leading the Testing Team to the success of project

            •             Defining the scope of testing within the context of each release / delivery

            •             Deploying and managing resources for testing

            •             Applying the appropriate test measurements and metrics in the product and the Testing Team

            •             Planning, deploying and managing the testing effort for any given engagement

            •             Functional testing. You can analyse changes to the development of products and services and plan design. You know how to run and manage appropriate tests to ensure that requirements have been fully met. You understand and can identify the most effective techniques, data sets and tools to use. You can communicate defects or trends clearly to software developers, outlining how defects are identified and the possible causes. You can design, or provide assurance for, appropriate risk-based end-to-end system integration test models.

            •             Non-functional testing. You know how to analyse changes to or the development of products and services. You can plan design in a non-functional environment. You know how to run and manage appropriate non-functional tests to ensure that requirements have been fully met. You understand and can identify the most effective techniques, data sets and non-functional testing tools. You can communicate defects or trends clearly to software developers, outlining how defects are identified and possible causes. You can design or provide assurance for appropriate risk-based end-to-end system integration test models.

             •             Technical breadth. You know how to use a range of contemporary technologies including cloud platforms and open source to better enable and enhance the delivery of QAT services. You stay abreast of industry developments to make cost-effective use of new and emerging tools and technologies. You can use a breadth of knowledge from across the wider technology and digital professions, strengthening the effective delivery of services. You have relevant professional awareness, which may include architecture, continuous integration and deployment, coding or scripting languages.

             •             Test analysis. You know how to visualise, articulate and solve complex problems and concepts. You can make disciplined decisions based on available information. You can apply logical thinking and gather and analyse information using a range of tools and techniques. You know how to use data to formulate both short-term and long-term strategic plans, identify and analyse options, and assess feasibility and operational impact. You can ensure that the business solution aligns with the vision, mission, objectives, strategy and the business and user needs. You can identify and recognise a viable solution or control.

The Senior Test Manager will be responsible for ensuring that Test analysts ensure the test plan, test execution and test reporting is performed for the customer(s) they are accountable. The testing should be performed according to the schedule set out by the test manager. All test activities should adhere to the Test and Validation Management processes and good practice standards. Other responsibilities include supporting the test analysts in reviewing change requests and technical aspects of environment management, defect management, automation and tools management (HP ALM, Activ and SPIRA).

Key Requirements 

            •             PC Literate, ability to use standard MS Office applications, particularly Excel to a good user level

            •             Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

            •             Ability to multi-task and prioritise effectively

            •             Excellent organisational skills

            •             Excellent attention to detail

            •             Self-motivated, able to work off own initiative or as part of a team when required


Desirable Skills

            •             Understanding of UI based automation (e.g. Activ)

            •             General Windows support and configuration experience

            •             Working knowledge of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure / Virtualisation

            •             Installation and configuration of Microsoft Operating Systems experience

            •             Experience with Installation and configuration of key business applications, i.e. Microsoft Office, Outlook etc.

            •             Experience with Operating System Registry Hives

            •             Experience with TCP/IP Networking

            •             Experience with Microsoft Active Directory

            •             Experience with Windows Deployment Services

            •             Experience with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista & Windows 7/8 & respective components; Windows Server 2003 / 2008 / 2012 & respective components

            •             Experience with debugging & root cause analysis

            •             Understanding of security principles

            •             Command Line experience

            •             Experience with network diagnostic tools such as WIRESHARK for debug / fault finding purposes

            •             SQL Server and Windows Server knowledge
